Ride Hand Signals

Hazard in Road - Point immediately with emphasis with the left arm. Sometimes this must be done with the right arm or foot.

Single File – Left arm and index finger straight up.

Staggered File Left arm and two fingers extended straight up with “rams horn” sign.

Stop/ Slow Down - Left arm extended straight down with the open palm facing back.

Stop Quickly - left arm extended straight down in a pumping motion.

Speed Up – Left Arm down to side, fist clenched with twisting motion as if turning throttle.

Follow Me – Left arm extended straight up from shoulder, palm forward.

Pull Off – Left arm positioned as for right turn, forearm swung toward shoulder.

Turn Signals (Accidentally left on) – Open and close hand with fingers and thumb extended.

Fuel – Arm out to side, upper arm about 45 degrees below horizontal, forearm pointing to tank with forefinger extended.

Comfort Stop - Upper arm extended horizontally, forearm straight up, fist clenched with short up and down motion.

Food, Coffee Stop – Fingers closed, thumb to mouth.

You Lead – Arm extended (palm forward) down. Begin behind hip and swing forward in an arc away from body about 45 degrees from vertical.

Come Alongside – Same motion as You Lead, but stop at side and point to position for other cycle.

Pack Becomes Separated (i.e. some of the bikes didn’t make through a signal light) the last rider in the first group will flash the motorcycles high beam lights on and off.

Freeway Lane Changes -The Ride Captain will signal the lane change using hand signals only. The signal will be relayed down the pack to the Tail Gunner. The Tail Gunner/s will move over into the lane and hold the lane open for the pack. Once the lane has been secured, the two bikes preceding the Tail Gunner/s will move over only if it is safe to do so. Turn signals will be used at this time. This procedure will be repeated, two bikes at a time, until the entire pack has moved over.

Breaking Intersections - Must be done with the total cooperation of other motorists on the road. We are requesting permission to break the intersection, not demanding it. The two lead bikes will begin by securing the intersection. Once the intersection has been secured, the lead riders will signal the pack through. As the pack drives through the intersection, they will automatically fall into a single file formation to the right side of the roadway, and travel to faster than 30 miles per hour. The two lead bikes will follow the pack through the intersection and cautiously pass the pack on the left side. As bikes are passed, they may fall back into a double file formation.
